Call it “Human Green!”  The Trend: support of artisan-created products. It’s an experience that many enjoy.

Boston-area colorist and designer Barbara Jacobs, owner of Silk Road Weaves custom Tibetan rugs, reports that “Clients state a preference to direct their hard-earned dollars toward individuals rather than mass-produced items.” States Jacobs, “Among many people there seems to be an increased interest in appreciating individual efforts with the result of owning something unique, special, and custom.  I love to call this the ‘human green’ experience because it’s so directly related to our individual economy and well-being in general.”

As this applies to the world of area rugs, she offers five important things to know about ordering a custom Tibetan rug.

Massachusetts color consultant Barbara Jacobs views consultation as client education.
“There’s a lot of information available for D-I-Y decorating. All that information can also create confusion rather than great solutions. I created the new “Case Studies” page on my web site to allow people to be comfortable with the process  of working with a color consultant, as well as to provide a view into the before and after photos that make the case.

“Most home owners assume that there’s not much involved in choosing paint colors, but such an assumption may be in error. There’s actually quite a bit of what I call ‘internal detail’ that goes into helping people create the interior and exterior built environments that will meet their needs.  Clients have often commented to me that after our sessions together, and seeing the results in their own homes, they feel more confident about making design decisions even when working with a professional,” she says.

Exterior design issues are also very important to homeowners, and Jacobs chose the subject of the first “case study” on http://www.integralcolor.com/home/case-studies/,  a 1950s custom Massachusetts home  whose  homeowner wanted to create a great view of his house from the street.

October 2009 Green Expo in DC to feature Silk Road Weaves with GoodWeave “Faces of Freedom”

The original design rug, FLORA/Herbal Toss, by Barbara Jacobs, Boston-based designer and owner of Silk Road Weaves Tibetan rugs, will accompany the GoodWeave-sponsored photography exhibition “Faces of Freedom,” on display in the Fair Trade Pavilion of the upcoming Green Expo. The event will be held at the DC convention Center, October 10 and 11, 2009. GoodWeave is the organization formerly known as RugMark, dedicated to eliminating child labor in the rug industry.

The two-day Green Festival, organized by Global Exchange and Green America, is a festival celebrating sustainably made products. Attended by tens of thousands of socially and environmentally conscious consumers, the Green Festival is the largest event of its kind in the world.

States Jacobs, “As a member of Rugmark / GoodWeave, my rug FLORA / Herbal Toss (see photo below) has been selected to accompany the GoodWeave-sponsored documentary photography exhibition ‘Faces of Freedom,’ on display in the Fair Trade Pavilion. This 5’ x 7’ hand-knotted wool and silk area rug, my original design from Silk Road Weaves/collections and custom, is just one of the many custom rugs we’re having woven in Nepal for our clients.

GoodWeave membership ensures my clients that all rugs from Silk Road Weaves are independently certified as child-labor-free. The fees Silk Road Weaves pays to be a part of GoodWeave ensure that random, surprise inspections take place on our weaving looms and help fund rehabilitation and education for former child weavers. When you purchase a rug from Silk Road Weaves that carries the GoodWeave label, you can take pride in knowing that your rug is beautiful, inside out. From you, to the weavers in Nepal, it’s all about enriching lives with good design, through The Human Connection. That’s just one reason I love what I do!”
